There are so many things you need to remember when moving house so we have made this checklist to help simplify it and to ensure nothing gets missed in the process.

 

Here is a list of all the things you need to change when you’re moving house.

Services and utilities

Any services and utilities you have already will either need cancelling or updating to your new address.

  • Water authority – (send meter readings to the provider) It is important to let them know the date of the move so they know not to charge you past this point.
  • Mail redirection – A Lot of mail is important and you certainly don’t want it getting ‘lost in the post’ so updating your address is very important.
  • Gas – (send meter readings to the provider) You must make them aware of the date the move is happening. Might also be worth comparing providers to ensure you are getting the best deal at your new home.
  • Electricity boards – (send meter readings to the provider) Don’t leave this till last minute as it can take about 48 hour for them to update information.
  • Telephone supplier – Arrange the date for the phone to be cut off or transferred to the new home.
  • Mobile phone provider – Let them know so then can update your records, if moving area you might find the signal is better with a different provider.
  • Internet provider Arrange the date to be cut off and opened up at new address.

  • Milk Delivery – Let them know the date you’re moving and whether they can deliver to your new address.

 

Financial

  • Banks or Building society – Visit your banks website as close to the move as possible to ensure their details are correct as your point of residence is a way of proving identity.
  • Credit Card – At the same time as letting the bank know you are changing address you might as well also get your cards updated.
  • Council (Council tax)
  • National Savings
  • Employer – They need your up to date address for your contact details as well as for your wages.
  • Insurance companies – (Health, Home, Life, Travel, Pet) Insurance companies need to be informed when you are changing addresses to ensure their contact details are accurate and also depending on your provider and the area you are moving to the rates may change. Simply go to your insurers website or call them to update your details.
  • Pensions Company – If you are on Private pension you will need to go to their website, if you have state pension just CLICK HERE.
  • HMRC – (Taxes, Child benefit, Pension, National Insurance)  CLICK HERE
  • Premium bonds office – (Get form P2767B from Post office)
  • Solicitor

 

Health

When moving you may need to change the following to the local practices if moving out the area, make sure you do this in advance as there might be a delay.

  • Doctor
  • Dentist
  • Optician
  • Vets
  • Donor register – CLICK HERE

 

Motoring

  • DVLA – Your driving licence will need to be updated of your new address. This can be done here: CLICK HERE.
  • Vehicle Log Book (V5C) – When changing address you must update your vehicle log book, this is usually free but avoids you receiving a fine of up to £1000. CLICK HERE
  • Vehicle insurance – The address for your insurance needs to be updated for payments as well as for your contact details. The change in address may cause a change in your payment rate depending on where you are moving too.
  • Breakdown cover (AA/RAC etc) – To change your address for this you just need to go to your providers website, be aware that sometimes providers have different rates for different areas.

 

Other

  • Friends and relatives – It is an exciting time, let everyone know about it. Plus gives them the chance to update their address book
  • Magazine Subscriptions – Don’t miss out, let them know you have moved!
  • Newsagent
  • Social and Sports Club
  • Children’s School/college – Make sure the school is aware so all their records are up to date.
  • Loyalty cards / Stores –  Anywhere you have an account with will need your new address for their records.
  • Library – Let them keep their records up to date by informing them.
